Santa Ana Wind Damage in Murrieta?

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

A dandelion is blowing in the wind. We restore commercial property damage 24-hours a day in Riverside County.

It has been very windy in Murrieta and Riverside County recently. In February, tree-bending Santa Ana winds blew through the region, creating road hazards and hurling objects onto streets and freeways, causing damage to cars and structures. According to the National Weather Service, peak wind gusts were recorded between fifty and seventy miles per hour across the Inland Empire.

According to the National Weather Service, Santa Ana winds occur when air from a region of high pressure over the dry, desert area of the southwestern United States flows westward towards low pressure located off the California coast. These winds are most common during the cooler months of the year, occurring from September through May.

Storm-Damaged Business in Murrieta Hot Springs?

2/22/2022 (Permalink)

Commercial air conditioning units sit on top of a building. We restore commercial storm damage 24-hours a day in Riverside County.

Over six inches of rain fell in January in many parts of Riverside County. The large amount of precipitation caused flooding and damage to some businesses in Murrieta Hot Springs. Heavy rain is known to cause water intrusion, and sometimes water can enter the structure through the air conditioning unit. SERVPRO® of Murrieta offers this information from the Institute of Business and Home Safety for checking your air conditioner:

Internal Drain

If the air conditioning unit has an internal drain, make sure the pipe size is adequate, and water is running and flowing freely to handle a high volume of water.

Caulking of Air Conditioning Unit Sleeve: Look for any gaps, cracks, or other damage that indicates improper caulking around the edge of the sleeve to the exterior of the building. This increases vulnerability to water entry.

Orientation: If the unit is wall-mounted, tilting the air conditioning unit sleeves slightly (two degrees) towards the exterior wall can significantly reduce the water’s entry.

Weather Stripping: Proper weather stripping between the air conditioning unit and the sleeve can reduce the water from entering.

SERVPRO of Murrieta wants you to know that you can try to fight a small fire only if:

  • You can get to the fire extinguisher quickly. Fire is fast. Fire damage and smoke damage are less painful than personal injuries
  • You have the right class of fire extinguisher
  • You know how to use the fire extinguisher

SERVPRO of Murrieta explains the Types of Commercial Fire Extinguishers:

Classes A, B, and C fire extinguishers are found in both homes and businesses

  • Class A is for cloth, wood, and paper
  • Class B is for liquids that can burst into flame or explode, such as grease, gasoline, oil, or oil-based paints
  • Class C is for electrical equipment like computers, tools, or anything else that is plugged in
  • Most home-improvement stores sell multi-purpose fire extinguishers: Classes A:B:C
  • Class D is for metals that can burst into flame.  Class D fire extinguishers are usually needed only in some factories
  • Class K is for vegetable and animal oils and fats that are in cooking appliances.  Commercial kitchens (restaurants, cafeterias, catering businesses) often use them

OSHA Guidelines for Fire Extinguisher Usage in Murrieta

4/2/2020 (Permalink)

The letters OSHA written on a paper on a clipboard. SERVPRO of Murrieta is Here To Help.

SERVPRO® of Murrieta knows that owning a fire extinguisher is not enough. Knowing the proper use of fire extinguishers can prevent fire from destroying lives in Murrieta.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requires that employers train their employees how and when to use fire extinguishers. OSHA does not allow untrained employees to use a fire extinguisher.  They must provide the training shortly after the employee is hired, and then every year thereafter. OSHA also requires monthly inspections for fire extinguishers.

Fire extinguishers have to be placed where they cannot be moved or damaged. The carrying handle should be 3-1/2 to 5 feet above the floor.

Employees must know when to use fire extinguishers.

SERVPRO of Murrieta suggests asking yourself these questions regarding fire extinguishers in your Murrieta business:

  • Have I pulled the fire alarm?
  • Can everyone get out?
  • Is the fire extinguisher easy to reach?
  • Do I know how to use it?
  • Is the fire contained in a small area?
  • Is the smoke non-toxic?
  • Do I have an escape route?

If you can answer “yes” to all of the questions, it is reasonable to use the fire extinguisher.

SERVPRO of Murrieta  reminds you that fire is fast. If you cannot contain it within 30 seconds, get everyone out of the area. Call 9-1-1 once you are outside.
