It was a cool winter evening in Murrieta. We lit the outdoor firepit, and a gust of wind came and blew some of the embers up and onto the deck above us, causing a fire to break out. It happened so fast. Although the Murrieta Fire Department responded quickly to our call and extinguished the fire before it could spread to other parts of the house, there was still a lot of fire and water damage left from the firefighting efforts.

• Do not store items that can ignite underneath a deck.
• Increase the gap between deck boards from 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch.
• Increase joist spacing from 16 inches to 24 inches
• Apply a foil-faced self-adhering flashing tape (foil-faced bitumen tape) on the top of each joist.
