Cooking accidents are responsible for nearly half (48%) of house fires in the United States. Even when a cooking fire is confined to the kitchen, the resulting damage may spread throughout the house.

Whatever the cause of a house fire, once it is safe to go back into the house, take a few deep, calming breaths and call the professionals at SERVPRO of Murrieta. Our phone number is 951-894-4392.

Emergency services are always available, and fire and smoke damage qualify as emergencies, so don’t worry about calling.

Steps You Can Take

Remediation of smoke damage is not a do-it-yourself project. Non-professionals may view items or parts of the structure as unsalvageable that we can remediate. Conversely, non-professionals may also spend time trying to clean or repair items that cannot be repaired. Leave the assessment to the professionals.

There are things you can do before we arrive:

  • Wait to return to the building until the fire department says it is safe.
  • Throw out food that was exposed to fire or smoke (burned materials may emit toxic smoke).
  • Contact your insurance agent (or you can wait, as it is something we can do).
  • If you don’t know what insurance will cover, save all receipts.
  • Depending on the effect of the fire, you and other house members should have a checkup.
  • Take the pets to a veterinarian (as above).
  • You may need to arrange for another place to stay while the damage is being remediated.
  • If it is safe to go into the house, photograph, or video, the damage.
  • Tell us whether you need fences, tarps, or other barricades.
  • Write down an inventory of your valuables.
  • Move intact valuables or other possessions to a safe place.
  • According to the American Red Cross, surviving a fire is one of the most stressful events a person can go through. The fire department can provide a list of resources for you and your family members.
