Hail 101

Murrieta experienced hail and severe weather in March. Atmospheric instability combined with very cold temperatures caused a series of hailstorms to fall over Murrieta and areas nearby on March 11.

SERVPRO® of Murrieta responds to storm damage emergency calls 24-hours a day in the Murrieta area and have seen the damage caused by the high winds, hail, and heavy rain.

According to the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), hail is defined as a form of precipitation consisting of solid ice that forms inside thunderstorm updrafts. Here are some more interesting facts about hail from the NSSL:

·      Hailstones are formed when raindrops are carried upward by thunderstorm updrafts into extremely cold areas of the atmosphere and freeze

  • Hailstones grow by colliding with liquid water drops that freeze onto the hailstone’s surface
  • The largest hailstone recovered in the United States fell in Vivian, South Dakota, on June 23, 2010, with a diameter of eight inches and a circumference of 18.62 inches. It weighed almost two pounds
